Autologous Serum Eye Drops

What are Autologous Serum Eye Drops? Autologous means that the donor and the recipient are the same person. The eye drops in this case are made from your own blood. Red blood cells and clotting factors are removed, leaving behind blood serum. This is diluted with a sterile, preservative-free solution to produce a tear substitute that is unique to the patient, and contains many important growth factors and nutrients normally found in healthy tears. Since blood and tears have an almost identical salinity and pH, there is no issue of burning or stinging upon instillation. Because they are non-preserved, the drops are stored in the freezer until you need them.

Additional in office treatment

Punctal Plugs ( Tear Reserve)

  • Punctal plugs are tiny, biocompatible devices that can be inserted into tear ducts to block drainage. This increases the eye's tear film and surface moisture to help relieve certain forms of dry eye. Also known as punctum plugs, lacrimal plugs or occluders, these devices often are no larger than a grain of rice.

Prokera Membrane

  • PROKERA® is a combination medical device used by eye doctors around the world for anti-inflammation, anti-scarring and promoting healing of damaged eye surfaces. It contains the only FDA-cleared cryopreserved amniotic membrane, which supports the corneal-healing process without harmful side effects.

  • iLux allows direct visualization of meibomian glands, blockages, and expressed meibum throughout treatment via the magnifying lens, providing a direct view of the treatment area.
  •  The proprietary light-based heat source gently warms the inner and outer lid to a safe therapeutic temperature. Sensors in the disposable iLux Smart Tip monitor inner eyelid temperature continuously during treatment.

  • The Zocular Eyelid System Treatment, or ZEST, is similar to BlephEx. While BlephEx uses a small rotary tool to clean away the debris on your lash line, ZEST is performed by using manual exfoliation with a micro-matrix swab. This allows for a more gentle experience while still thoroughly cleaning the lid margin.
  •  ZEST uses a gel cleaner during treatment called Zocushield. This gel is an okra-based formula, which is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Okra is also believed to help with the production of collagen, which can help with elasticity in the skin around the eyes, helping to keep wrinkles at bay.

BlephEx is an in-office procedure that allows your eye doctor to treat blepharitis by eliminating the biofilm and bacterial toxins that cause inflammatory lid disease and dry eye, and improving the overall health of the eyelid.
